You find joy in making, building, and bringing ideas to life through hands-on creation. Whether crafting, cooking, designing, or constructing, you experience flow when transforming raw materials into something new.
You're driven by curiosity to discover how things work, investigate the unknown, and venture into new territories. You find play in the questions, the search, and the thrill of uncovering what's around the next corner.
You're energized by challenge, games, and the pursuit of mastery or victory. You find play in testing yourself against others or your own personal bests, thriving on the structure of rules and the satisfaction of winning.
You find satisfaction in creating order, systems, collections, and patterns. You play by sorting, categorizing, arranging, connecting people, and/or bringing structure to chaos.
You live in the world of imagination and pretend, where reality bends to possibility. You find play in fantasy and stepping into alternate worlds through your mind's eye.
You experience play through physical movement, using your body to express and engage with the world. You find joy in running, jumping, dancing, climbing, roughhousing, maybe even thrill-seeking — any activity where your body is the instrument of play.
Four decades of play research, distilled.
Play Styles is distinct from other personality assessments: it reveals the spark of your unique play nature and shows you how to tap into that limitless source — the part of you that is naturally curious, energized, joyful, resilient, and authentic. For many of us, this has been buried beneath years of adult responsibility. But chronic play deprivation can make us susceptible to cognitive rigidity, emotional dysregulation, social impairment, and diminished physical health.
Grounded in neuroscientist Jaak Panksepp's discovery that play is one of seven primary emotional systems in the subcortex, this framework draws from four decades and thousands of clinical personal play histories collected by Dr. Stuart Brown and the National Institute for Play. The patterns in play histories reveal our biological design to play in unique ways.
Understanding your unique Play Style helps you identify natural entry points to the state of play, giving you a toolbox to access those entry points more easily and often. You can make intentional choices about how you spend your time, design environments that energize you, connect more authentically with others, and navigate challenges. This approach weaves together the ancient wisdom of temperament, emotional systems, and psyche with the transformative lens of playfulness.
Your Play Style is like a fingerprint: totally unique to you. Personality is complex, and this framework is an oversimplification. It's not meant to be rigid or profiling, but instead to help you tap into your inner pathway to authentic expression and thriving.

What are Play Styles?
Play styles are the natural patterns of play that bring you the most joy, energy, and resilience. Based on thousands of clinical play histories conducted by the National Institute for Play, everyone leans toward one or more of six primary styles: Explorer, Creator, Competitor, Mover, Dreamer, and Organizer. Think of it as a play personality profile rather than a typical personality test. It's not meant to be rigid or put you in a box; it's simply meant to give you a natural pathway into meaningful, transformative play.
How long does each Play Style quiz take?
The free version takes about 5 to 7 minutes. You'll answer a mix of Likert scale, forced-choice, and slider questions, then get a personalized snapshot of your top style and a 3-page PDF you can download. The premium version ($39) takes about 15 minutes and includes deeper questions across subtypes and play dimensions, producing a 12-page personalized report.
What's the difference between the free and premium assessments?
The free version gives you your top Play Style and a short summary. The premium ($39) is a deep dive that includes your primary and secondary styles, all 24 subtypes ranked, a personalized play menu, an opposite-style analysis, a play dimensions breakdown, well-being indicators, and more. The free version is the what. The premium is the what, why, and how.
