Privacy Policy

Who we are

The Play Styles quiz and the Live Playfully Journal are operated by the National Institute for Play (NIFPlay), a nonprofit advancing the science of play. Questions? Email inquiry@nifplay.org.

What we collect

  • Your first name, last name, and email address (when you choose to view your results).
  • Your answers to the quiz questions and your computed Play Style scores.
  • Optional demographic answers (age range, gender, country, sector).
  • Journal entries and reflections you write, if you use the Live Playfully Journal.
  • The date and time you submitted the quiz and gave consent.
  • Basic technical information your browser sends (e.g., IP address, user agent) for security and abuse prevention.
  • How you arrived at the site: any campaign tag on the link you clicked and the domain of the referring site (for example, "linkedin.com" or "google.com"). We store the domain only — never the full address or any search terms — and we use it solely to understand which of our own channels bring people to the assessment.
  • If you join the referral program, we collect the name and email you provide so we can give you your personal referral link, track who used it, and send your $8 reward. If a reward requires a payout method such as PayPal, that payout address is stored only for the purpose of sending the reward.
  • If you purchase a physical journal through one of our shop links, the transaction and shipping details are handled by our commerce provider; we do not store your full payment or shipping information ourselves.

Payments are processed by Stripe. We never see or store your full card number.

How we use it

  • To show you your personal results and email a copy to you.
  • To give you access to products you purchase and let you return to them.
  • To send you occasional updates from NIFPlay. You can unsubscribe at any time.
  • To run the referral program: creating your link, crediting successful referrals, and sending reward payouts.
  • To advance play science research, in aggregated and de-identified form only. Individual answers are never shared with researchers or published.

Lawful bases (GDPR/UK GDPR): we rely on your consent for marketing emails and for optional research use of your responses; on contract for delivering results and products you request; and on legitimate interests for security and abuse prevention.

Not health or diagnostic information

Some questions touch on energy, stress, and well-being. Your results are for personal reflection and play science research only. They are not a medical, psychological, or diagnostic assessment, and we do not use your answers for any health, clinical, insurance, or employment decision.

We never sell your data

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for their own marketing, advertising, or profiling purposes. We run no advertising trackers on this site.

Cookies and browser storage

We use only first-party cookies and browser storage: keeping you signed in, saving an assessment in progress, Stripe's fraud protection on checkout, and optional referral attribution which you can decline. The full item-by-item list is in our Cookies & Storage Notice.

Do Not Track

We do not track visitors across third-party websites or services, so there is no cross-site tracking to disable. If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, our behavior is unchanged: no cross-site tracking, no data sales.

How long we keep it

  • After five years, both free and premium assessment records are automatically de-identified: your first name, last name, and email are removed, while anonymous scores are retained indefinitely for research.
  • If you begin an assessment but do not finish it, we keep an anonymous record of how far you got — with no name, email, or answers attached — so we can see where the experience loses people. It is stored separately and is never used as research data.
  • Account and journal data are kept while your account is active.
  • Contact details and marketing preferences are kept until you unsubscribe or delete your account, after which they are removed from active mailing lists.
  • If you delete your account, we remove your login, personal details, and journal content promptly. Both free and premium assessment records are de-identified — the link to you is erased — and only anonymous scores are retained for research.

How we protect it

  • Data is stored in an encrypted database with strict access controls.
  • Only authorized NIFPlay staff can view individual records.
  • Your responses are confidential and are not sold to third parties.

Your rights

You can ask us to:

  • Access the information we hold about you.
  • Correct it if it's wrong.
  • Delete it permanently (the "right to be forgotten").
  • Port it — download a machine-readable copy.
  • Withdraw consent or unsubscribe from email updates at any time.

If you have an account, you can download or delete your data yourself from your account page. Otherwise, email inquiry@nifplay.org from the address you used to take the quiz.

Service providers

We use trusted infrastructure providers to operate the site — database and authentication hosting, email delivery, and Stripe for payments. These providers process data on our behalf under confidentiality agreements and do not use your information for their own purposes.

International transfers

Our providers store data in the United States. Where we receive personal information from the EU, UK, or Switzerland, transfers are made under Standard Contractual Clauses with those providers.

Minimum age

You must be at least 16 years old to take an assessment, purchase a product, or create an account. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes, we will update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you by email.
